In the Michigan congested contest for the Republican Governor nomination, Congressman Peter Hoekstra leads businessman Rick Snyder by 6 points, 26% to 20%. Attorney General Mike Cox has 16%, former State Senator Mike Bouchard has 11%, State Senator Tom George has 2%, “another candidate” has 3% and 22% are undecided. These results are based on an automated survey of 742 interviews of likely Republican primary voters fielded June 8th and 9th.
Looking at the image ratings of the candidates, it is clear that all five candidates have been successful introducing themselves to Michigan’s Republican primary voters. Peter Hoekstra has name recognition of 93% and the strongest image ratio of 2.3 to 1 (44% favorable/19% unfavorable). Mike Cox has name recognition of 94%, and Mike Bouchard and Rick Snyder have name recognition of 89% and 85% respectively. Although Attorney General Mike Cox has the strongest name recognition among all candidates, he has the highest unfavorable rating and an image ratio of 1 to 1. Senator Tom George has the worst image ratio among all candidates, with 9% having a favorable image of him and 24% unfavorable. It will be interesting to see how the candidates position themselves over the next two months heading toward August 3rd.
